YouTube spends millions to promote videos from their Partner channels. Did anyone realize that? People were sold on the idea that everyone has an equal chance of reaching the world audience via the web. They say that all you need to do is post your video on youtube and have accounts on social networks where you post info and before you know it you will have masses of fans and be financially successful in your endeavors as a writer/band/filmmaker.
This is true in the same way that everyone has an equal chance of winning the lottery. While the basic statement may be true the reality is that 99.9% of the people who buy a ticket don’t win. Most never will no matter how hard they try. At least not beyond winning $20 here and there and maybe a few hundred on rare occasions.
The same is true of fame via the web by “accepted” methods. The original youtube stars did become popular shortly after the site launched when the competition was much smaller. YouTube then put money into these stars by giving them video equipment and cash and spending money on promoting them. All to show that “anyone” could be a star.
Now, according to this story, YouTube is launching some channels on the site and wants to make them popular. Does YouTube plan to rely on the audience and the power of social networking to make the channels rise to the top? No. YouTube is going to spend 200 MILLION dollars in order to promote these channels.
Conclusion? Social networking doesn’t even work for the big companies. Everyone needs to spend money on promoting themselves just like they always did, even the social networking companies. So remember that and spend your money wisely, hire as professional who can guide you instead of wasting what you have on “pie in the sky” promises from people who are, for the most part, only in it to enrich themselves.
