Google hashtag search is something totally new to me. I discovered this new feature on Google search about an hour ago. Maybe this is common knowledge to most people but it is not to me. It started when I was examining the video from an HOA (Google+ Hangout On Air) that I did today on YouTube.
I noted that the video had found a good niche based on the suggested videos to the right of it. By looking at those videos you can pretty much tell what kind of videos yours will appear next to as a suggested video when others do a search. Much of what determines placement seems to be the wording of the title. I could tell you horror stories about badly titled music videos.
Anyway, something else I noticed is that Youtube was kind enough to supply some keywords for the HOA video on YouTube. Another thing I noticed is that several of the YouTube supplied keywords were hashtags. I thought that was interesting.
I went to google search and looked up #musicvideo. The results gave me a whole new type of result (sounds redundant I know but it is midnight here) and Google Hashtag Search was born. On the right side of main search results there was a sort of vertical slider showing posts from Google+ that contained the hashtag #musicvideo including the image of the post with the tag. At the bottom of the slider are the options to repeat the search on Facebook or Twitter.
But wait, there’s more! I clicked on the links at the bottom of the slider to repeat the search on twitter and facebook. In each case Google took me to the social network and repeated the search ON THEIR SEARCH ENGINE! I mean it dropped me onto facebook and searched facebook for me, ditto with twitter. That is a whole new functionality as far as I know, the direct integration with the search engines of other sites with Google search.
When I clicked on the Google+ results in the slider I went to a page showing a 500 error. I was using Google Chrome and Windows 8.1. I am assuming this indicates that the Google hashtag search feature is something new and perhaps still in its beta phase.
Google Hashtag Search = #googlehashtagsearch
In honor of the discovery (you knew this was coming) I created my own hashtag to commemorate the event; #googlehashtagsearch
This feature will undoubtedly have implications for #seo and #videomarketing as well as #indie #music and #film promotion (note my excessive hashtag use). Is this gong to become one more part of the Knowledge Graph based presentation of search results? If this is the case then it offers one more chance to gain position in search results along with all the others that are represented in a Knowledge Graph search (web, video, images, news, wikipedia, small business directory listings).
It is too early for me to speculate much beyond that. But Google announced yesterday that there was another #panda upgrade coming that would positively affect small businesses. Perhaps Google hashtag search is related? At any rate I will keep you up to date on developments as I learn more.
